We Mourn the Loss of Bob Witham Camden Training Center lost a dear friend and the racing community lost a great horseman when Bob Witham died in December 2008. A memorial at the National Steeplechase Museum, sponsored by Shadwell Stable and Rick Nichols, was attended by many colleagues, friends and family members. Click here for a personal tribute by Jennifer Leadbitter, who worked with Bob for many years. Excerpt from news article in bloodhorse.com: Bob Witham, a veteran horseman who broke horses for Shadwell Farm for more than two decades, died Dec. 17 at the age of 65. Witham started breaking yearlings for Shadwell in 1986, and had worked full-time for the farm since 1992. He died as a result of injuries sustained from a Dec. 12 spill off his pony at Camden Trainng Center. Witham worked with numerous successful Shadwell horses over the years, including 2006 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Jazil, and this year’s Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (gr. I) winner Alwajeeha. Witham, who spent most of his life schooling young horses in preparation for the racetrack, also worked as a trainer and former jockey, having come to the United States from Europe in the late 1960s. As reported in England's Eclipse Magazine by Shannon O’Lear, an attendee: For a lengthier tribute to Bob, please visit Joe Clancy's story in Steeplechase Times. News Archives |
